In 1255, a French army under the command of Olivier de Termes, a former Cathar Knight, was dispatched to deal with these last remaining Cathars. http://montsegur.fr
This Castle still stands guard over the vast panorama of the plain of Roussillon. Perched over 700 metres high on the southern ridge of the Corbières, the views from the Castle are extraordinary.
The Castle is known as one of the five sons of Carcassonne, along with Peyrepertuse, Aguilar, Termes and Puilaurens, five Castles strategically placed to defend the French border against the Spanish, until the border was moved in 1659.
It is one of seven Castles in the region that are classed by UNESCO World Heritage as ‘serial property’. In 1239
